these days

Summer days are fun. Among the moments of boredom, chores, and insanity, there tends to be some good old fun. Movies, the park, riding bikes until dark, you know the drill. I would take a boring hour or two for the summer life any day.

beach

Our first day at the beach for the summer was beautiful. I don't remember seeing so many flocks of pelicans when I was a kid. They flew by many times while we were there. The water was cold, the sand was hot and the breeze kept a blowin.
And we hit Thrifty for ice cream on the way home by tradition.

sadie runs

Sadie was excited about running this race again. She was nervous about her placement and wanted to improve her personal best time. It was on her mind all week. Today she placed third and posted a 6:34 mile time.
She makes me happy because she uses the gifts she was given. All my girls are blessed with who they are and all I could hope for is they be their very best...not disappointed, so happy!

Skunk juice hurts

Image
Coco tried to play with a baby skunk this morning at 4 am. She would not give up until the skunk got her good in the face. It burned her pink little nose. Now she smells just wonderful as well.

these are our days

The weather has been exceptionally lovely, the ocean more sparkly than normal and just all around good. I am thankful.

herein lies a trend

These two. They sleep together every where, but most recently, they have been landing in our bed at bedtime. On this occasion, I asked Avery if she could go brush her teeth, but she said she was too tired. One minute later, she was snoozing. Early this morning, while night birds called each other, Coco sat up and jumped off the bed, waking me up. She was after something and I thought it was Sylvie. I pulled the covers back and looked down to get out of bed to see a baby skunk run under my side of the bed, while Coco ran out into the hall.
After an hour and a half of coaxing and problem solving, our smelly guest returned to the out-of-doors without leaving a trace of her perfume. Close call? Yes. Thankful the dog was on the bed to alert me of intruders? Double yes.

in the garden:

Work in the garden continues. The strawberries are nice, a few each morning, but are about to be pulled to make room for more herbs. This time I was thinking summer iced tea and further into winter hot tea. There is peppermint and chamomile to add and fennel for tea maybe or some lovely fall salads. (I am thinking sliced root.)
Tomatoes are coming along nicely, with every plant holding its first cluster of fruit. This time last year, I had giant plants and no flowers, making our "early girl" tomato harvest not come to pass until late July. This year I should have a few nice fruit by mid-June, but I do need to add amendment asap to boost the growth and get ready for the twenty some squash and pumpkin starts we will be sharing with the school garden.
Lastly, I really need to get one, and only one, zucchini in the ground. I have found a way to cook them up so everyone eats them, except Avery. I still have time with her, repeat the offering and eventually they will come around.
